Sharing Success: Jill Schimdt

The Schmidt's

Today I want to share with you about one of my best friends: Jill Schmidt. Over the past few years Jill & I have become close friends through our husband's careers in baseball but I know with or without baseball we will always be friends. I love her passion to help young girls & her love for her family. After having two boys she has lost all her baby weight plus some & is now setting high goals for herself! I am so proud of her! Please read the following to learn how you can be apart of her passion & to see what goals she has set out to do!

1.  What has motivated you to start running?
After the birth of my second son, Drake, I lost most of my weight just by a strict diet and the physical activity that comes along with a new baby and a toddler in the house.  I realized that even though I had lost the weight, I was not in shape at all.  When we got to Arizona for my husband's physical therapy I knew this was the perfect time for me to take advantage of the situation and the weather and do something about it.

2.  What are you currently training for?
I am training for a 10k run.  I could run 2 miles when I started this...barely, and it near killed me. But even still, I could do it, so I wanted something that would challenge me and that I could complete the training during our time here in Arizona.

*Note: Jill texted me yesterday saying she completed her first ever 3 mile run! You go girl!

3.  How has staying fit as a mommy affected you in other areas of your life?
I always want to set an example for my kids.  I hope that they can see me working hard for something and learn that they need to work hard to achieve their goals in life.  Something that I did not expect out of this has been what a great opportunity running has given me to spend some quiet time with the Lord.  I turn on my music and spend most of my running time just in prayer or an attitude of worship.  It has also been fun to be on the other side of the fence in my marriage.  I am always the one cheering on Nick and now he is the one cheering me on! I am so thankful to have a husband who is such a great encourager and who knows how to very kindly hold me accountable. He also never forgets to tell me how proud he is of me for putting my mind to something and actually doing it.

4.  What is one piece of advice you would give other mommies who are wanting to get fit?
You owe it to yourself and you owe it to your kids.  There is nothing more rewarding than being able to run with my kids, play with them, keep up with them, and not feel like I'm going to pass out afterwards.  Those are the precious memories they will remember for a lifetime and set as a standard for themselves as parents one day.

5.  Now that we have learned about your personal fitness, can you tell us about the ministry you are involved in? What is it called?

The ministry I am involved in is called Loving Choices.  It is a crisis pregnancy centeroffering free and confidential pregnancy testing, STD testing, ultrasound, adoption counseling, post abortion counseling, and an "Earn While You Learn" center, which is where I help out.  It is called the CARE center.  The girls get to come in for a weekly appointment where they can get prenatal education, parenting education, Bible studies, life skills, money management, and really anything they want to talk about.

6.  What got you into volunteering at Loving Choices Pregnancy Center?
I started volunteering here because Nick and I went through an unplanned pregnancy our sophomore year of college. We were not married, we were 20 years old and scared out of our minds.  We considered abortion thinking there was no other way out for us.  He was expected to be drafted the next year and I was on the University pom squad.  We wrestled with different emotions for several weeks before I finally decided that I could not go through with the abortion and that I was going to keep the baby. The pregnancy was very difficult for me. I had never felt more ashamed of myself or more alone. After Mason was born I wanted to offer my support and my experience to other girls who were feeling the same way that I had and to show them that there is a light at the end of the tunnel...and most importantly, that this is not God punishing them, it is a gift.

7.  Can you share an experience from Loving Choices that stands out to you?
There are so many but I always try and thoroughly explain to the girls how hard the first few weeks are going to be.  With Mason, I felt like I had no idea how little sleep I was going to get, how hard breastfeeding was going to be, and how crazy my emotions would run.  I do not want these girls to be unaware and then come back after they deliver and be totally frantic.  BUT-the good Lord never ceases to amaze me! More than half of the time when I ask the girls if it has been easier or harder than they expected they say EASIER! Just proof that God will not give them more than they can handle, and awesome that they can come out on the other side feeling accomplished at being a mother.

8.  What are some ways others can help this cause?
There are several ways to get involved.  First and foremost, prayer.  We also have several yearly fundraisers. The next one we have coming up is the Annual LifeWalk for Loving Choices.  This will be my third year participating! It is a two mile walk raising awareness and funds for Loving Choices.  You can  also visit www.lovingchoices.org for more info on the center.

9.  When is the LifeWalk and where can others go to support you?

The LifeWalk will be June 11th at the Arvest Ballpark.  If you would like to make a donation, you can go to my fundraising page to sponsor me in the walk!  www.fundeasy.com/m/705886 and click on donate! Thank you so much and God Bless!

Today's tip: Instead of getting in your car to go to the grocery store load your kiddos up for a nice walk! It's a good way to get your family involved & to save on gas! Win, win!

Saturday: Treadmill.

Click here to see today's run.

Back to the good ole treadmill today! If I could choose I would have 60 degree (some say that is still too warm) weather every morning to run, however, it doesn't work that way. Schedules & weather tend to get in the way & you just do what you gotta do. Today I got on the treamill. We picked up Jeremy from the airport pretty early this morning.... early enough I had to wake Jace up so I went for a late morning run inside. It was already 100 degrees here by 10:00!! Crazy I know. Overall, it was a great workout!

At what point is it the hardest not to stop in a run? I get this question a lot. I think if it's a 4 mile run then the 2nd mile is the hardest. It is the point where you have to push through before it begins to seem downhill in the run. Once I get past that 2nd mile I feel pretty good & by the last mile I am up to a good pace & feeling accomplished. Where do you struggle in your runs? How do you overcome them? I would love to hear!

Saturday's food of the week:
Spaghetti is popular on the Hefner's weekly menu. We have it at least once a week. The trick to eating a healthier family spaghetti night is to use lean ground turkey instead of beef & to use whole wheat pasta... add a little oregano to your sauce and..voila! :) Just remember: the less legs the meat has the better. think about it!

Updates:

Keep on keepin on!

Keep on keepin on!

Click here to see today's run.
9And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint.

Galatians 6:9

Keep on keepin on. This is what I had to tell myself today before & during my run today. I went to bed not feeling great with a stomach ache & the same this morning. I really didn't want to get out there today to be perfectly honest. I wanted that satisfied feeling you get after a hard workout without the workout.... you would think I'd figure that out by now, especially as  a trainer! ha! As I contemplated on if it was too hot? Should I go to the treadmill & battle Jace's attentions span? Or do I just suck it up & go for the hill outside in the heat? I finally went for going outside w/Jace & the jogging stroller. We loaded up & battled that nasty hill.

One thing I noticed during my workout was my negative thinking. It was a constant battle until I took my last step to the house. I stopped for a drink of water a few extra times today because of the heat. I have gotten dehydrated out in AZ before & I really don't want to experience that again.

All of these battles in my mind remind me of all the other areas of my life we tend to battle positive thinking. I love how fitness relates so much to the perspective in life. That is one reason why I will encourage my kids to be active. It teaches you more than just the game: It teaches you about life. If you haven't noticed already from all my tweets & facebook status' I love Joyce Meyer. I wanted to share a great article with you on how to keep on keepin on in everyday life battles.

"Whatever you may be facing or experiencing in your life right now, I want to encourage you to stay positive and refuse to give up! God is with you, and He’ll help you make spiritual progress—strengthening and encouraging you to keep on keeping on during rough times. It's easy to quit, but it takes faith to press on to victory."
Joyce Meyer

I choose to keep on keepin on in my training & in my life, everyday! I refuse to make one more excuse! It's a choice!

*Today I am thankful for my no swivel Jeep Jogging Stroller w/built in ipod: See here.
*Don't forget about Monday's Favorite Things give-a-way! Be sure to get in it to win it!

Today's 2nd Tip: If you are running on side streets without a running trail be sure to run against traffic! Especially if you like to run with your ipod!

Get running & refuse to give up!

Bonus post: Running Shoes.

Running shoes: Just how important are they?

I believe your shoes play a huge role in your training. Not everyone can wear the same type of shoe. I have had good & bad experiences with my running shoes. For the longest time I went for the cutest, cheapest, most reasonable shoe... not anymore. Once I began really investing a lot of time into working out & running I decided it was time to take a few extra minutes & possibly spend a few extra dollars to find the right shoe. (mine ended up being cheaper!) I couldn't have done the half marathon without these shoes! They made a huge difference in my training & performance the day of the race (especially in the rain!).

I am partnered up with a company called Mind Body Sole: a FANTASTIC shoe store! If you go to Mind Body Sole they will take time to make sure you have the BEST experience in finding the shoe for you!

If you decide to go get some new shoes at Mind, Body, Sole PLEASE use my name as your referral: Hefner Fitness, Sarah Hefner :)

Click here to see their facebook page! They are located in the Woodland Hills Mall- Tulsa, Ok (look online for other locations)

Favorite things update: I will be giving away my first favorite thing, Monday June 6th! Be sure to come back to see what you could win!

Today's EXTRA tip: While grocery shopping stay clear of the inner aisle's! The fresh & clean foods are on the outside aisles of the grocery store. Think about it :) Dairy, Produce, etc. Plan your grocery list before you go! I'm headed there this morning! Good luck!

Get to shopping!

my little trainer.

See circuit workout here.

Today's workout was right here in our living room floor with my little buddy. We started out with some great pump you up music then we ended it with some Veggie Tales... let's just say I had to be flexible yet focused. When you become a mother who wants to promote health & fitness in your family you do whatever it takes... today I did just that. It wasn't easy & instead of catching my breath for a split second between exercises I was picking up sippy cups & singing to Jace. Maybe that's why he is such a good little trainer? He doesn't believe in resting... at all. He also doesn't believe in stretching because it kept taking away from him setting in my lap. He thinks when I sit on the floor that means its Jace time (usually does). Overall, it was a great sweat for 45 minutes of non-stop working out & chasing Jace.
Today I am thankful for my health & for motherhood. It's a rewarding combo.

Get your family involved in your workouts!

Today's tip: You should eat a good source of protein & carbs within 45 min of your workout to repair muscle tissue. Protein shakes are a great idea! Email me for more information on what protein shake to drink!

Words of Wisdom Wednesday: Megan Armstrong.

Megan & I June 5, 2009 on her wedding day.
Happy "early" 2 year Anniversary!

Megan is not only my sister-in-law but she is my friend who shares common interests with me: blogging, motherhood, & running.

I am excited to share with you a glimpse into her world of getting-her-body-back. She recently had my beautiful niece, Alivia in April & is taking it one day at a time in her mission to run again. I hope you are encouraged by her words!

Written by Megan Armstrong:
I am a wife, proud mother of a baby girl, and a woman on a mission-to-get-her-body back.

For the nine months Alivia was growing inside me I did some massive growing myself. I gained nearly 60lbspounds while I was pregnant. Walking onto the labor and delivery floor on April 3rd I weighed in at a whopping 201lbs. For those of you thinking: Oh my goodness.. that's a lot of weight to gain for one baby! Believe me I was thinking the same thing. Luckily 30lbs was water weight that came off within the first two weeks of meeting my baby girl.

Six weeks after that on May 17th I began my journey weighing in at 169lbs. That morning I laced up my running shoes, and hit the pavement. Walking way more than I ran, I finished my first two miles as a mom, stroller and all.

Two weeks into my journey I can say: it is a daily choice to get moving. It is a hard and slow process that I wish I could speed up, but I can't.

There are no room for excuses. You can do it. I can do it. My goal is to be  a happier, healthier wife, mother, and a women who got her body back (and then some). My goal is to weigh 135lbs and to finish a marathon within a year of Alivia's birth.

I am here to tell you, it is not about how fast you are or how far you go. The most important thing is putting one foot in front of the other and giving it your all.

Get moving today.

Thank you Megan for being an inspiration to all of us mommy's out there on a mission-to-get-their-body-back! Love ya!!
